Botox aftercare: first-week do's & don'ts for best results

If this is your first Botox, you're not alone. I hear a version of this all the time: you felt at ease during the appointment, and you're already watching for that “very noticeable improvement within 2 days.” The single most important rule right now is simple: stay upright for 4 hours and keep your hands off the treated areas. No rubbing, no massaging, no pressure. That's how you protect clean, even results here in Everett, especially if you're headed back out into a busy day.
Your first 24 to 48 hours after Botox (this is where results get protected)
Right after Botox, I want you thinking “gentle and boring.” That's a good thing. Most issues people run into come from pressure, heat, or getting their heart rate up too quickly.
Do this today
- Stay upright for 4 hours (no lying down, no naps on the couch).
- Use a gentle cold compress if you feel puffy or tender. Keep it light and short, don't press hard.
- Keep your face clean and calm. If you're putting on skincare, pat, don't rub.
- If you bruise easily, arnica can be helpful. And if you take blood-thinning meds or supplements, don't stop anything without medical guidance.
Skip these for 24 to 48 hours: alcohol and strenuous exercise. If you're a Boeing commuter squeezing an appointment into a tight schedule, plan a low-activity day so you're not rushing to a workout or sweating under heavy layers right after.
One more practical tip that matters: avoid tight hats, headbands, or helmets for 24 hours. Pressure is pressure. If you're running along the Port Gardner waterfront and it's chilly and wet (classic Everett), it's fine to wear a hood, just keep it loose and avoid anything that compresses your forehead.
Days 2 to 7: the “looks better every morning” week (and what can mess it up)
This is the week people start texting their friends about it. I've had first-timers tell me they saw a very noticeable improvement within 2 days. That can happen. Just remember Botox continues settling over the next several days, so don't judge it hour by hour in a magnifying mirror.
Keep doing
- Stay gentle when you wash your face. No aggressive cleansing brushes or rubbing towels.
- Stick with your normal, non-irritating skincare. Hydration is your friend.
- Pay attention to how your expressions feel. It's normal for movement to soften gradually.
Avoid for two weeks
Heat and facial manipulation are the big ones. That means no sauna, no hot tub, and no facial treatments or facial massage for at least two weeks. In our cool, wet Everett weather, it's tempting to warm up with extra-hot showers and steam. Keep showers warm, not scalding, and skip long steamy sessions for now.
If you're heading to an event: schedule Botox when you can keep things calm afterward. Angel of the Winds Arena nights are fun, but plan your treatment so you're not rushing into a sweaty crowd or wearing a tight beanie right after injections.
Makeup, showers, and workouts: quick Botox aftercare tips I give in the mirror
These are the questions I get most in Downtown Everett, usually while you're grabbing your keys and checking your reflection one last time.
Makeup
If you need makeup the same day, wait until any pinpoint bumps calm down, then apply with a light hand. Pat and blend, don't grind product into the skin. Clean brushes and sponges help too.
Showers
Warm shower is fine. Skip very hot water and long steam sessions for the first couple of weeks, especially if you notice flushing or swelling afterward.
Exercise
I generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before strenuous exercise. A gentle walk is usually fine, like a low-key loop near Legion Memorial Park, as long as you're not sweating heavily or doing inversions.
And yes, this is the week to avoid anything that presses on the injection areas. Tight goggles, tight hats, heavy face-down massages, even sleeping with your face smashed into a pillow can be a problem for some people.
Side note if you found me while searching for facials near me, facial spa near me, or waxing near m: I love pairing services, but with Botox we keep facial treatments on pause for two weeks so you don't disrupt your result.
Products and habits that keep Botox looking natural (and not “overdone”)
My goal is the same as what I hear people mention after their appointment: results that look super natural. Aftercare helps, but it's mostly about what you don't do.
- Keep skincare simple for a couple of days: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
- Hold off on strong actives if your skin feels reactive: if you use retinoids or acids and you're feeling tender, pause until things feel normal.
- Don't “test” the muscles all day. Repeatedly raising your brows or frowning in the mirror won't speed it up.
- Choose rain-friendly comfort: Everett weather can tempt you into heavy layers, beanies, and hoods. Keep anything near your forehead loose for the first day so you're not creating pressure or sweat.
If you want a deeper timing guide for the first two days, I laid it out step-by-step in our Botox aftercare 48-hour timeline.
When to reach out to me (normal vs not-normal after Botox)
A little tenderness, a small bump at an injection point, or a minor bruise can happen. Most bruising fades over several days, sometimes up to two weeks depending on your skin and your schedule. If you're in Everett, Mukilteo, Marysville, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, or Snohomish and something feels off, I'd rather you check in than sit and worry.
Call us right away if you have:
- severe pain, spreading redness, or fever
- vision changes
- difficulty swallowing or breathing
- sudden, significant asymmetry that worries you
I've been here in Everett for a long time, and I take the long view. People come back because they feel listened to, they get the plan explained clearly, and they don't feel pushed. If you're due for your next visit, or you want to talk through units and areas (Botox is priced per unit starting at $12), call +14252584941 or email studiodonnamedspa@gmail.com. We're right here at 2608 Colby Avenue, Everett, WA 98201-4011, convenient for a quick stop after work or before waterfront plans.
And if you landed here searching for hair salon near me, hair cut near me, hair color near me, balayage near me, or highlights near me, you're in the right place. I love being the spot where you can handle your skin and your hair styling near me searches in one trusted studio, with smart spacing between services so your Botox result stays crisp.
